Editor's Verdict:

The Athlete’s Database is a sportier sibling to the Weightmania package which features in our top ten. Whilst Weightmania offers comprehensive support for both dieting and fitness, the Athlete’s Database specializes soley in exercises and workouts, which is why it’s a lot cheaper.

The Athlete’s Database can be used as an aid to weight loss and does indeed keep track of how many calories you burn off in great detail. However, if dieting is the main thrust of your strategy for achieving a healthier lifestyle, you might be better off buying either the full version of Weightmania, or one of the other packages in our top 10. Some of these cost even less than the Athlete’s Database and cover both the diet and exercise sides of the calorie counting game.

The Athlete’s Database is aimed at fitness fans who want to improve their physique, performance and general health mainy through exercise, which is why its workout logging and fitness tracking features are very much to the fore. It offers many other fitness features which support this: jogging and cycling routes can be planned, training equipment assessed and organized and every bodily process tracked and charted in fine anatomical detail. Logging is fast, quick to learn and easy to use. In fact, if you want to make your body your hobby, there is everything here the fitness fetishist could want except a full-length mirror.

As far as dieting features go, whilst you can keep a record of your meals in the journal, there is no actual food database that tells you how much of each nutrient every meal contains. There is, however, quite a useful grocery list manager that keeps track of what foods you need to buy to support your exercise regime, including when you will need to buy more and how much each will cost. This is handy but ultimately something you could easily do for yourself with a pen and paper, or, better yet, a spreadsheet.

On the other hand, many of the fitness tools and calculators provided by the Athlete’s Database offer a great deal of insight you’d be hard pressed to find using your own resources. The body fat calculator, BMI and BMR tools will be of great interest to dieters, as will the charts showing you how many calories you’ve burned and how many you need to consume in the future to stay optimally healthy. That said, you will find most of these tools in any decent dieting software package, where you will be able to use them much more effectively in conjunction with a full food database, for proper calorie budgeting.

The value for money on offer here is fine in and of itself, but be aware that you can get more for less if you shop around. On the plus side, if you are not sure whether or not this is for you, you can always download the free trial version and try it out right now.

For those who aspire to enhanced fitness and improved sporting performance there is much information, motivation and fun to be had here, but, as the name implies, this program is designed more for keen athletes than for the general dieter.
