Editor's Verdict:

Bodyfitdb is a popular diet and fitness software package that is currently being upgraded to a new, better, faster and shinier version 3.0. That version isn't ready yet, but that's actually good news because in the interim the developers have decided to offer the existing version of Bodyfitdb to download for free.

This may seem like an unprecedented move and you might be excused for wondering if this is a merely an elaborate marketing exercise designed to build expectation for the new version. Actually, it's more simple than that: the current version is about to become technically obsolete, so they're giving it away. But obsolete doesn't necessarily mean useless.

The facts are these. This is not a stripped down trial-version or a thinly-veiled advert for the forthcoming release, there are no built in expiry dates or annoying pop ups pushing you to buy 3.0. Instead, it's a fully functional diet and fitness manager that has been used successfully by thousands of customers over the past five years.

But five years is a long time on the internet. The dieting software market has come a long way in that time and has grown massively. In order to compete with the very best packages around (for these, see our top ten) BodyFitdb is being redesigned to incorporate a streamlined interface, more features and better graphics. There's nothing actually wrong with the existing version, it's just not cutting edge anymore. Which means you can download a decent diet and fitness management package, that has pretty much everything the casual dieter will want, right now, for free.

The program itself puts as much emphasis on exercise and general fitness as it does on nutrition, and focuses on eating a better diet in general more than on dieting to lose weight. As such, it's aimed as much at men who like to take care of themselves, as at female dieters - the traditional target market of the dieting software package. It's a well balanced total fitness program, so you can use both fitness and nutrition modules. Just use it to control your diet and ignore the fitness aspects, or vice versa. This flexibility is one of the package's most attractive features. That said, you will get the most health benefits if you use the program to its full potential and, practically speaking, once you've learnt how to use one side of it, you'll probably be able to pick up the other more or less straight away.

What it doesn't do is work out nutrition and exercise programs for you based on your profile, although it does give you the information necessary to do this yourself in a more informed fashion. Unlike a lot of fitness software, Bodyfitdb recommends you consult a professional trainer or dietitian rather than trying to provide you with a virtual one. It will, however, show you how well the regime you are following is working on a series of 57 different charts and graphs.

This omission is presented more as a philosophical and practical decision than a shortcoming, but if you do want a program that plans your diet and fitness regime for you, there are plenty in our top 10 that will do that for you. But, of course, none of those are free.

All in all, the Bodyfitdb approach to weight loss and general fitness has a lot to offer and is easy to learn and use. Whilst not as comprehensive as some of the other programs available, you may nevertheless find it does everything you need. Otherwise there's the option of waiting for version 3.0 to come out. If you do decide to download Bodyfitdb though, you'd best get a move on; the developers are only planning to offer it free as a download until the next version comes out.
