Editor's Verdict:

An accessible and well-designed weight loss tool, Diet Organizer does exactly what the name says, and it does it far more effectively than you could hope to do yourself with a pen and paper, or even a spreadsheet. It is ironic that a computer should be so much better than a human being when it comes to organizing something as inherently organic as weight loss. But that's exactly what Diet Organizer, and the other packages that made our top ten list, can do.

The problem with trying to diet without assistance from a program like Diet Organizer is that however meticulously you keep track of the food that goes into your body and the resultant changes in your weight and waistline measurements, you can never account for exactly what goes on in between those two steps. Sometimes your latest diet seems to be working and that's very rewarding, other times your efforts seem to be having no effect whatsoever and your will to stick to the diet flags. Often that's when diets fail. Diet Organizer helps you fill in the blanks and understand which dieting techniques work for you, which don't, and why, by getting to know how your metabolism functions. By logging your intake of calories and thirty plus nutrients, then factoring in your changing weight and measurements, it is able to extrapolate your unique metabolic rate and work out exactly what happens inside your body when you diet.

This means that a computer-assisted diet can be far better customized to the needs of your unique metabolism, and therefore far more likely to ultimately succeed, than any other. By knowing you better than you know yourself, Diet Organizer can tell you exactly what you need to do, how many calories you can afford to consume, which nutrients you need more of and where you can get them.

Diet Organizer's system for logging your meals is very streamlined compared to most other dieting software packages so it's fairly straightforward to select your meals from the database of over 6000 foods for which Diet Organizer already knows all the nutritional values. The database is also linked to an easy meal-planning system so you can build the right nutrients into your diet day by day and week by week. This makes calorie budgeting (and as a result taking control of your diet) very easy even for relative beginners. This is true of Diet Organizer in general - it's very simple and quick to use and daily logging of meals shouldn't take you more than a minute or two. You'll still need willpower to succeed, of course, but at least you won't be flying blind.

But regularly and accurately logging your food intake is only one half of calorie budgeting with Diet Organizer. It also allows you to log the calories you have burnt off through exercise and take those into account when calculating your calorie budget. This is done by selecting exercises and durations from a similar database containing information on the calorie costs of more than two hundred forms of exercise. Obviously, this sounds like a lot - can you even think of two hundred different forms of exercise? - but this includes settings for different intensities and speeds, allowing the calorie cost of a light jog to be recorded differently from that of, for example, a fast run up a hill of the same duration.

The look of the program is colorful and appealing despite the complexity and sheer amount of information on screen. Every dieting software package has to balance the need to incorporate as much useful and digestible information as possible with the need to present the user with something visually pleasing and not too crammed with daunting numbers and stats. This is something Diet Organizer does better than most. Each page has clearly been carefully designed to do what it needs to in the most informative and accessible way possible. You can also customize the display views and what appears on the charts in pretty much any way you can imagine.

Diet Organizer offers superior versatility to most of its rivals when it comes to running on platforms other than a Windows PC. Not only is there an Apple Mac version but it also runs on palm devices, Blackberries and mobile phones. Very few dieting software packages offer this degree of multi-platforming, so if that's a big selling point for you then Diet Organizer should be pretty close to the top of your list. Having said that, the reason most diet software companies don't offer this degree of multi-platforming is probably because it creates so many technical compatibility issues and related hassles that need to be resolved. Diet Organizer's method for getting around this is to offer separate programs that run on each platform, the downside being that you won't be able to sync your mobile version of Diet Organizer with the PC version. Each is a stand-alone product, sold and used separately, so best bear that in mind before getting too excited. To prevent confusion, this review will mainly be referring to the PC incarnation of Diet Organizer rather than any of the mobile variants, unless stated otherwise.

If you like the sound of all this and want to try out Diet Organizer for yourself, you'll be pleased to hear that you can download a trial version of Diet Organizer PC for free. This will work for 10 days before you have to decide whether to buy the full version or not. The Free Trial version is actually the same download as the full version with a built in expiry date, at which point you can choose to pay for the registration code, which you then type in, thus activating the program permanently. To Diet Organizer's credit, this seems the most logical of all the various methods of offering free trials you will find with dieting software packages.

If you do decide to buy the full version of Diet Organizer, you will find it slightly more expensive than the average dieting software package, though by no means the most expensive around. Even so, you do get quite a lot for your money. True - some of the rival packages further up the top 10 do offer larger databases and a fuller range of advanced features, but Diet Organizer includes all the features the average dieter is likely to find useful on a regular basis, so you probably won't miss the extra whistles and bells too much.

If a colorful and intuitive user interface is more important than having every single feature and tool imaginable at your fingertips, Diet Organizer shouldn't disappoint you, even given the slightly higher price tag. For most dieters it's a solid choice.
