Editor's Verdict:

The French Diet allows you to track your daily food intake, estimate your actual dietary needs and use this knowledge to help you eat a healthier diet. This is true of most dieting software packages in this category, but the French Diet gives you all this from a distinctly Gallic, or at least Mediterranean, perspective.

This is a new slant on what dieting packages do anyway rather than a radically new perspective, a slant which combines the latest knowledge with the traditions of the Mediterranean diet - fresh ingredients, seasonal fruit and vegetables, olive oil and so forth. So instead of featuring all 6200 foods in the USDA database, the French Diet suggests only 1450 foods that fit into the Mediterranean dietary tradition, although you can also access the others if you want to. The French diet also does its best to make logging your meals and analyzing your intake of nutrients enjoyable by injecting a healthy sense of fun.

This is very much a no-nonsense approach to dieting. Technical details are kept to a minimum and there's a much stronger and more distinctive and appealing visual style than you find with most dieting software packages, which often look and feel much like any windows based office application.

Admittedly, there are dieting software packages that give you more breadth and depth of information, some of them are even slightly cheaper, but many users will find that the French Diet gives them everything they need, and it's all wrapped up in a more attractive package than usual, too. Likewise, this is a package more aimed at food lovers than sports-nutrition obsessives. This will be fine for a lot of dieters, but the lack of exercise logging and workout-related features means the French Diet isn't quite as well balanced or flexible as some of its rivals. If you want to keep track of calories burnt as closely as you do calories consumed, the French Diet probably isn't for you. Here the emphasis is on eating for health, for long life and simply for the pleasure of eating, rather than to max out your energy supply so you can power-blast your abs.

On the plus side, there is a free trial download version available, which will enable you to try the French Diet for yourself before you pay out any money. This is actually the same download as the full version, except when you decide to buy you are given a code which unlocks French Diet proper for you. The value for money on offer is not bad - in terms of sheer range of features you could do better but you could also do a whole lot worse, and besides the French Diet's main selling point is its unique take on dieting rather than its vast array of tools. Another advantage is that there is a version of the French Diet available for Apple Macs as well as PCs, something surprisingly few dieting software developers offer.

Whilst calorie budgeting with the French Diet may not be quite as sophisticated as it is with our top-rated programs, its marriage of modern dietary know-how with the traditions of French cooking at least offers something unique. In fact, if you prefer a more visual and less technical approach to understanding and controlling your diet, you may find the French Diet is just the ticket.
