Editor's Verdict:

Mealformation is a pretty savvy approach to planning and executing an informed and safe dietary regime that puts the emphasis on achieving balance and on the choices you make every day that add up to you living a healthier and longer life.

It's a shame about the clumsy hybrid name, which is only one letter away from being "malformation". After all, physical deformity isn't the sort of thing you want to associate with your quest for a leaner, healthier body. So let's forget this linguistic bastardization, which would make even Baron Frankenstein shudder, and focus on what Mealformation (ouch) can do for you.

The two pillars of balance and choice are central to the Mealformation approach. The focus on choices is a smart one because it puts you, the dieter, firmly in the driving seat. Being able to understand, plan and track your diet from an informed perspective means that you feel in control of your diet, rather than enslaved by it, and are thus much more likely to stick with it rather than rebel against it. It forces you to acknowledge your eating decisions as just that - a series of conscious choices rather than behavior you have no control over. By implication, this makes you responsible for your eating choices, responsible for your current condition and ultimately responsible for your progress towards slimness, energy and health. By emphasizing your choices, Mealformation empowers you to eat a better diet rather than bullying you into doing so.

The second pillar is balance. This applies not just to eating a balanced diet (although obviously that's an important aspect of Mealformation) it also applies to balancing good nutrition and sensible portion sizes with actually enjoying your food. The three are not mutually exclusive and Mealformation is adamant that eating a healthy diet doesn't mean you don't have to give up on the joy of eating. It's all about balance, because only a balanced mental approach to dieting will be sustainable in the long term and result in lasting weight loss.

Ironically, balance is also one of the areas in which Mealformation loses out to a lot of its competitors. The very best diet management software packages are those that give you the whole enchilada of dieting tools and features but also take into account how much you exercise and how this effects your overall progress. This allows you to track calories out as well as calories in and enables you to practice real calorie budgeting. Nutrition, after all, is only part of the equation. Mealformation does go a little way to incorporating your physical activity levels into your profile, but nowhere near as far as the best of its rivals and, arguably, nowhere near far enough. Having said that, there are dieters who resolve to avoid all exercise and lose weight by better nutrition alone, in which case Mealformation may well tick all their boxes.

On the plus side, the Mealformation user interface is very user-friendly and easy on the eye compared to a lot of the other packages on the market. The screen layouts are simple and uncluttered by extraneous stats, numbers and acronyms you'll never understand, which is good news for the mainstream dieter who isn't a trained nutritionist. A related drawback is that Mealformation doesn't offer you as wide a range of features and tools as other packages, but this is only a drawback if you are the sort of dieter who needs to track and monitor everything in order to feel in control of their diet.

Unlike a lot of similar packages, you can't download Mealformation directly, rather you have to order it from the website and then wait a short while to receive it via an email, which is a little odd but not overwhelmingly cumbersome. There are two variants of Mealformation to choose from - the basic version, which is designed for individual users and allows you to set up five user profiles, and the Extended version, which allows you to set up as many profiles as you want and is designed for professional trainers and dietitians managing the nutrition of a number of patients or clients. The Basic version will be quite enough for most users - the allowance of five user profiles is actually quite generous compared to a lot of packages that insist you buy another copy if you want another member of your household to use it. The price itself is slightly higher than the average, and at the upper end of what you would expect for a package that focuses mainly on dieting and doesn't really encompass exercise.

In the final analysis, Mealformation does what it does extremely well, though ideally it should do rather more. For those who aren't into exercise and don't mind paying a little above the odds, however, this is a nicely put together, well-balanced and very presentable diet management package which many dieters will find very useful.
