Editor's Verdict:

My Personal Diet offers more or less everything you would expect from a top-notch desktop PC dieting software package but is specially designed for use on a Pocket PC.

Whilst a handful of other software packages in this category are suitable for Pocket PCs, very few are designed with this platform in mind rather than developed for a proper computer and then adapted, squeezed and compromised until they fit on a pocket device. The other exception to this rule is My Sport Training, a companion package also produced by VidaOne which focuses on workouts and performance training rather than dieting and weight loss.

Pocket PC's, or Windows Mobile Devices, as Microsoft now want us to call them for obvious reasons, have often been seen as something of an undiscovered country when it comes to applications that offer the same flexibility and functionality you expect from a desktop or laptop machine. My Personal Diet challenges this by offering a suite of tools, databases and gizmos comparable to most desktop/laptop PC dieting and exercise software packages.

My Personal Diet makes what could be a very technical and stats-laden experience (especially on a tiny screen) look as engaging and accessible as possible with liberal use of graphics, charts and color. Using MPD starts with setting up a profile and then either making a diet plan, or choosing one from the list available, catering to most dietary preferences (eg. low carbohydrate diet). If you choose to build your own diet, MPD helps you select appropriate foods and predicts the results of your regime in easy-to-read charts.

Once you've created your own diet, the meal logging begins. This is fairly straightforward and involves searching and selecting foods from more than 7500 on the MPD database, each of which is broken down into macro and micro nutrients so you'll know exactly what's going into your system. The flip side is that you can also log your exercise workouts and subtract the calories you burn from your calorie intake. The exercise logging is nowhere near as detailed as you'll find with My Sport Training, but it might be sufficient for the general dieter for whom nutrition rather than exercise is the main issue. It's certainly more comprehensive than the meal recording system on My Sport Training. So if you're stuck over which of the two packages to buy, unless you're really sporty My Personal Diet is probably the more balanced choice.

The price of the overall package is very reasonable, particularly when you consider that it offers most of the options and tools you would expect of a full-scale exercise suite on a PC. Very little is sacrificed for the sake of platform size; if anything this imperative has resulted in even more intuitive and smartly designed interface systems.

All in all, if your preferred platform is a mobile PC, MPD is unlikely to disappoint, either in terms of range of features or ease of use. The price isn't bad either.
