Editor's Verdict:

My Sport Training is a fitness-focused software package suitable for dieters who see sports and exercise as integral to their weight loss program. But what's special about My Sport Training is that it is designed specifically to run on a Pocket PC.

This is indeed a boon, as, whilst a few other software packages in this category are suitable for Pocket PCs, My Sport Training is one of only two so far that have been designed with this platform in mind rather than developed on a proper computer and then adapted, squeezed and compromised until it fits on a pocket device. This gives My Sport Training a significant advantage.

Pocket PC's, or Windows Mobile Devices as Microsoft now want us to call them for entirely mysterious reasons, have often been seen as something of an undiscovered country when it comes to applications that offer the same flexibility and functionality you expect from a desktop or laptop machine. My Sport Training challenges this by offering a comparable suite of tools, databases and gizmos to most mainstream dieting and exercise software packages that run on real computers.

This makes a lot of sense for the hardcore gym-monkey, because it means you can take your fitness software to the gym with you. As a result you can enjoy instant gratification by logging your latest workout and seeing the improvements in your charts right away rather than having to write it all down or remember it, and then log it later, after you get home.

My Sport Training (a name every bit as memorable as.. no, it's gone) manages to make what could be a very technical and stats-laden experience (especially on a tiny screen) look as engaging and accessible as possible with liberal use of graphics, charts and color. Logging your workouts is made straightforward and fairly easy for new users to pick up. You can then see your progress laid out for you in a range of charts that track everything from weight and waist size to blood pressure and resting heart rate. This can be richly rewarding and highly motivating. If you want more exercises than MST provides, you can even purchase and download add-on exercise packages - choose from anything including Plyometrics, Flexibility exercises and routines that let you work on the specific muscle group of your choice. The range of exercise and workout features on MST is impressive given the medium it has to be squeezed into. Having said that, this package isn't really aimed at those who center their weight loss program mostly on dieting rather than exercise. If you like the look of MST but want more of an emphasis on dieting rather than exercise, the same company make a program called My Personal Diet, which also runs on Pocket PC which you might want to check out. You can find a review for My Personal Diet in the same list as this review.

Another plus point is that MST is constantly being improved and upgraded to include new perks and tweaks, so much so that, despite the platform itself being fairly young, it's already on Version 6. The developers could never be accused of resting on their laurels. The downside of this is the need to upgrade periodically. This isn't as much of a problem as it might have been, though, because anyone who purchased version 5 during or after November 2008 can upgrade to Version 6 for free.

The price of the overall package is very reasonable, particularly when you consider that it offers most of the options and tools you would expect of a full-scale exercise suite on a PC. Very little is sacrificed for the sake of platform size; if anything this imperative has resulted in even more intuitive and smartly designed interface systems.

All in all, if your preferred platform is a mobile PC, MST is currently one of your best bets. Bear in mind, though, that if you're more interested in the dieting rather than the exercise side of weight loss, it's probably not for you.
