Editor's Verdict:

Whether you want to optimise your sports nutrition regime, adapt to a medically restricted diet or simply lose a few pounds of weight, Nutrinote can help. It's a fairly solid all-rounder that's easy and fun to use, if a little pricey.

Like most dieting software suites, Nutrinote allows you to log your meals by selecting from a database of foods and their constituent nutrients. The Nutrinote database is, at best, medium sized compared to some rival packages, a mere 7,500 foods, although this will probably prove sufficient for the average dieter. The Standard version of the software only tracks 6 nutrients for each food item, which seems a bit mean, but another ten bucks gets you the Premium version which tracks 131 nutrients per food - much better. The exercise log is also fairly comprehensive and works along much the same lines as the meal database, so once you learn how to use one, you pretty much know how to use the other as well. The range of general tools on offer is also good.

Analysis of food intake is another feature omitted from the standard version, which again is an unfortunate omission since the nutritional analysis module is one of Nutrinote's strongest features. This again lends credence to the feeling that Nutrinote offers two different versions - not to provide the buyer with a range of options to suit different needs and budgets - but simply to make you opt for the Premium version rather than than deliberately hobbled Standard one.

Nutrinote does a better job than most dieting software suites at finding a distinctive and aesthetically pleasing look. It nicely avoids the usual Windows application grey-on-grey without going completely psychedelic. The blueish theme is subtle but works quite well, particularly in conjunction with the various colorful charts and graphs on display. A neat aspect of Nutrinote's visual style is the concept of an animated food diary, the pages of which you can turn as if it were a real book. This provides a nice unifying analogy for the program as a whole. Similarly, your diet is rated using the familiar traffic-light system which, for example, turns amber or even red if you transgress your chosen calorie limit for the day. All of this works well and goes a long way to making Nutrinote accessible and easy to use, even if you are not a hardcore techno-monkey.

Unlike a lot of software developers that tend to rest on their laurels for a while between versions, Nutrinote now offers a polished and shiny 2009 release which looks and feels modern, accessible and well-designed. The charts that track your changing weight, BMI etc are all easy to find and simple to understand. All of this helps to make Nutrinote one of the most user-friendly packages on the market. Better yet, it sacrifices very little in terms of complexity and sophistication to achieve this.

The prices are within the range you would expect for this sort of product, if a little above the average, especially for the heavily handicapped Standard version. If you shop around you could pay roughly the same amount and get something just as accessible without the gaps in functionality (see the no.1 reviews top 10 for this category). The lack of a free-trial option is also a shame.

Nutrinote scores highly for intuitive design and user-friendliness, but, beneath the surface, it is simply an above-average dieting software package that does the job perfectly well but charges a little above the odds. There are better choices around, but if you do decide to invest in Nutrinote Premium you're unlikely to be disappointed.
