Editor's Verdict:

Open Fitness aims to put you in control of your fitness program by keeping you informed and up to date about exactly what's going on in your body, and why, so you can achieve the results you desire. Whilst it incorporates both diet and exercise modules the emphasis is firmly on the latter, so Open Fitness will probably appeal more to the performance-focused gym user than to the general dieter.

Whilst a lot of software packages in this category lean heavily on either diet or exercise and incorporate the other only in a perfunctory way, the dieting features in Open Fitness actually stand up fairly well in their own right. You can log your meals in much the same way that you record your exercise sessions and both food and exercise modules are quite flexible, allowing you to add your own custom foods and workouts or even download more from the web. Neither the food database nor the range of nutrition tracking options are massive, but they should be enough for users who see good nutrition as a way of supporting their exercise regime rather than as an end in itself.

To get the full benefit from Open Fitness you really have to be a fairly serious workout monkey with a semi-obsessive gym habit, as most of Open Fitness is dedicated to cardio, weight-lifting and strength training. Although Open Fitness is suitable for both sexes it's probably fair to say it's aimed more at a male demographic than most dieting software. Also, if you're more of an athlete than a weight lifter you might want to try some of the other packages in this category which specifically cater to performance on a broader range of sports, such as running or cycling.

The user interface is pleasingly uncluttered and simple in design. It manages to avoid the characteristic grey-on-grey look of many windows applications without looking overly slick or whizzy. This simplicity of design is possible partially because there aren't quite as many extra tools and features included in Open Fitness as their are in most of the software packages in our top 10, but if you're not that bothered about extra gizmos this at least makes it easy to find your way around.

There are Standard and Pro versions of Open Fitness available for private users and personal trainers respectively. Actually these are both the same download, except that, if you purchase a Pro licence, you'll be allowed to track as many profiles as you like rather than just five. It's worth noting that whilst the number of users in the Standard version is capped, the allowance is a little more generous than a lot of other programs in this category which only allow you to set up one or two user profiles before you have to buy another licence. This makes Open Fitness handy for tracking the fitness of a whole household or family so you can compete with and support each other in your drive to get fit. The value for money Open Fitness offers is reasonable rather than exceptional, but the good news is that it does include a 30 day free trial.

If you are a PDA person, it's worth knowing that you can easily transfer your profile information between the desktop and PDA versions of the software, so, for example, you can log your workouts before you leave the gym and then go home and see your progress spread out on the bigger desktop screen. This does, of course, require you to own both versions. Whilst you would expect the functionality of the program to be a little restricted on the PDA version, in this case it's mostly the dieting features that fail to make the transition between the platforms, for some reason. If you're mainly interested in nutrition it's really best to stick with the desktop version.

In addition to the desktop and PDA versions, there is an online option whereby you can track your fitness profile from any PC with an internet connection. The online version offers everything included in the desktop version but also allows interaction with other members, enabling you to share encouragement, workout routines and tips, and generally help each other stay motivated. The online version also offers a couple of extra features that will be of interest to dieters - an automatic diet generator that uses USDA guidelines and a handy shopping list generator. It's fairly cheap too, starting at $5.99 a month and including a seven day free trial, but remember that, while the PC version only requires a one-off payment, this will be an ongoing expense.

Open Fitness is a solid choice for the PC user who sees improved nutrition as just one aspect of their fitness regime rather than their main concern. The package is easy to learn and simple to use, but unexceptional in terms of range of features and value for money. In our opinion there are better options around, but if you're a gym-focused fitness fan then Open Fitness may well tickle your fancy.
