Editor's Verdict:

PC Coach Elite is a performance-focused software package aimed very much at the serious amateur athlete rather than the dieter who wants to burn off a few calories to support their weight-loss regime.

The "PC Coach Elite" moniker is there not to differentiate it from a more basic (cheaper) version but from more advanced (expensive) versions designed for fitness trainers and coaches - "PC Coach Professional" and "PC Coach Scholastic". A stripped down (cheaper) version, "PC Coach Lite" was once available but seems to have been discontinued.

What PC Coach Elite does offer is almost everything the amateur athlete, weight-trainer or anyone with a semi-obsessive gym habit could desire to support their training. Not only does PC Coach Elite give you an edge in your training, it also makes planning your training regime fun and watching your performance improve hugely rewarding. The benefits are motivational as well as practical.

Within this remit, PC Coach Elite is highly flexible and adapts well to suit your unique training needs. There is a huge choice of calender views and different charts, allowing you to easily review your planned exercise sessions for the next whole month at a glance or focus in on just one workout and analyse it in mouth-watering detail.

The provision of additional plug-ins to help you train smarter as well as harder for your sport of choice (as long as your sport of choice is cycling, the triathlon, marathon running or a couple of other kinds of running) is impressive, but adds to the cost of a package that's already above average in price. Each add on costs about as much as a typical low-mid range dieting software package on its own, so it's a shame that, for the price you initially pay, you don't get the whole enchilada.

It's a shame too that there's not much here in the way of support for your dietary regime - whether it's intended to complement your training program or simply to help you lose weight. Not only that, but there isn't even a plug-in for it you can purchase, which seems like a missed opportunity.

A nice touch is that you can exchange workout plans and results with your coach or trainer remotely, although he or she will of course need to have compatible software to receive them. Another nice touch is the software's compatibility with certain brands of heart monitors, allowing you to download your heart rate during workouts and training sessions directly into the program rather than have to record and enter it yourself. One technical quibble is that the current version of PC Coach Elite isn't designed to run on Windows Vista, which is surely something that should have been addressed by now (the last major version update was November 2006). Similarly, there is no Apple Mac version.

All in all, PC Coach Elite offers everything for the serious and organised amateur sportsman, promising many happy hours poring over your performance curves and planning new training regimes that really push the envelope and max-out your performance. It's just a shame it couldn't incorporate proper dietary guidance too - providing your body with the best fuel is surely a must for any athlete who takes their progress seriously.
