Editor's Verdict:

Performance Diet's claim is that they can help you “nourish yourself thin”, which is a clever way of saying that this software package teaches you how to diet healthily by eating better rather than just eating less. And by all accounts it's very good at it.

Performance Diet's core promise is that if you follow its program, you will lose the maximum amount of weight it is possible to safely lose and that it will stay lost for at least 5 years. Better yet, this promise is backed up by a money-back guarantee which is good for 90 days after you purchase and download it. A key word in this promise is "safely". Whilst many "fad" diets may help you lose more weight in the short term, the Performance Diet system acknowledges that there is a scientific limit to how much weight you can lose in body fat, as opposed to muscle, water or organ tissue, which you actually need to keep.

Instead of promising dramatic and continuous weight loss, Performance Diet's schedules incorporate recovery periods to allow your body to acclimatize to its new, lower calorie intake, during which you may not actually lose any weight at all. Averaged out, this system promises that you should be regularly losing between half and a quarter of a pound of fat each week. This may not sound like a huge amount, but the Performance Diet philosophy emphasizes honesty - it may not promise the Earth but what it does promise it delivers.

It does this by setting you realistic meal and exercise schedules that suit your lifestyle and allow you to make the most of your limited free time. If you think you simply don't have the time to eat more healthily you should think again: Performance Diet can show you how to make your lifestyle work for, rather than against, your body.

The range of features it offers are generally very broad, though some have said they lean a little heavily on low-glycemic meals rather than taking in a fuller range of dieting techniques. In other respects, though, it is nothing if not comprehensive in its scope. For example, whilst many diet programs deal with food alone, Performance Diet spends almost as much time on the other side of the equation - making sure you take regular and efficient exercise. This is invaluable in an age when modern sedentary lifestyles may not give us the minimal amount of exercise our bodies have evolved to expect.

In fact, Performance Diet caters to not just the needs of your body and lifestyle but also to those of your mind. Its experts know that, aside from the physiological reasons many diets fail, there are also mental barriers to surmount. That's why a lot of the help Diet Power provides is specifically geared at making dieting rewarding and fun (no, really!) whilst maintaining your motivation and managing any weight loss stress you may encounter. That's why they like to describe this system as "the toughest diet you'll ever love".

The Performance Diet system is able to do this because its software is incredibly flexible. It combines the latest research with detailed data on your own lifestyle, preferences and needs to incorporate many of your favorite foods into exciting and well balanced meal plans day after day and week after week. You can even balance out higher calorie days when you treat yourself with lower calorie days later on. The emphasis on variety and on enjoying your food means that, whilst this diet may sometimes be hard, it is never boring.

The software itself is easy to download, quick to install and simple to get your head around, so you can get started on a healthier eating program more or less straight away. Your progress on this personalized regime is then translated into stats on a range of charts and graphs which allow you to monitor every aspect of your diet in detail, from blood pressure to body fat

What you get from the Performance Diet package is not just the software itself. It also includes 3 dieting ebooks, 6 motivational MP3 recordings and access to 150 megabytes of online dietary resources and tools for 5 years. This is an impressive package but you do wonder why they specify the 5 year limit. If you haven't managed to develop a healthy diet and lifestyle after 5 years of using the software and have to pay for it again then presumably there's something wrong. Performance Diet rationalize this as being a generous limit compared to a lot of systems in which you pay for 3 month's access at a time. This does happen, but increasingly today many of the best packages are offered on a single-payment basis with no need to renew after a fixed amount of time. This is odd but not really a problem – whether you pay once or once every five years you nevertheless get a lot of bang for your buck.

A plus point of the website for newcomers is that it gives you a good overview of how Performance Diet works before you stump out the cash and download the software. This “tour” is very structured and drip-feeds you the reasons why Performance Diet works one point at a time in an easily digestible fashion. Unlike a lot of similar sites, the price isn't plastered all over the homepage but is only quoted after the tour, nor are there excessive amounts of advertising and product promotion to wade through before you get to any useful information. If you're still not sure about Performance Diet after reading all this, there is also a free trial package to download, along with extra website content for free trial users, so you can really get to know this software before you pay a penny. The 30 day free trial also entitles you to almost $50 in free diet and sports nutrition products.

All in all, there are very few downsides to the service offered by Performance Diet. It represents good value for money, in fact it is generally slightly cheaper than the number one choice (allowing for special offers), albeit with a marginally less extensive range of features and benefits. Essentially, you really can't go far wrong.
