Editor's Verdict:

The Personal Travel Trainer En route Workout offers something a bit different from the other items in this category. It’s a clever idea too, if a little limited in scope as far as weight-loss software goes.

What the PTT does is run you through a series of useful flexibility stretches and toning exercises over the course of just over an hour. All of these are exercises you can realistically perform on a bus, train or airplane seat without incurring offence by elbowing your neighbor in the face or looking like a mental person. A relaxing female voice talks you through each set of exercises accompanied by relaxing music, helping to ease tension and avoid muscular problems. In addition to these physical benefits, PTT also aims to help improve your mood, reduce travel stress, increase your energy levels and improve your self esteem. The spiel avoids claiming specifically that PTT can help prevent deep vein thrombosis, which is wise given that it is still contentious whether lack of exercise on long journeys is a primary cause of DVT. Suffice it to say that the potential health and mood benefits of staying flexible are many.

Following an introductory section on posture, the exercises themselves are divided into stretching and toning movements. The stretching section is designed to help relieve tension and improve posture, circulation and energy levels whilst the toning exercises improve your muscle mass, balance, cardiac health and overall appearance. This second section can also help you burn calories, though be warned that PTT is specifically geared towards travel health and doesn’t actually provide you with a dietary program as most other packages in this category do.

The CD is nicely produced and the workouts are well-paced, though some might find them a little long. The program is also flexible, so you can start with the introduction to good body alignment and then either follow both the stretching and toning sections in sequence or just focus on one or the other, or even choose to exercise just one particular muscle group you’re having trouble with.

Another benefit (and one the marketing for PPT should perhaps make more of) is that this program would certainly also appeal to the increasing number of workers who spend most of the day sitting down at computer screens. The number of people who would benefit from building exercises into their working routine without breaking their flow of productivity must be huge.

Potential drawbacks include the likelihood that there will be some people who find the choices of voice and music irritating. The workouts can also seem overlong and repetitive, but this too is inevitable given the limited range of movement available from a seating position.

In sum, the Personal Travel Trainer is certainly a clever idea, nicely executed. It also represents good value. Whilst it doesn’t provide a full dieting program in the same way as the other entries in this category do, it isn’t designed to. If you do decide to purchase the Personal Travel Trainer CD )and this is surely a boon for long-distance travelers of any age) we recommend you do so in addtion to buying one of the mainstream dieting software packages in our top ten.
