Editor's Verdict:

Pro Track is a decent all-rounder as far as dieting software goes, covering all the basic features and placing a particular emphasis on exercising and strength training.

Admittedly, Pro Track is not a particularly helpful name for a software package - is this a program for professional track athletes? From the name you'd guess it tracks something, but we have no clue as to what (professionals?). In fact it tracks most measurable indicators of your fitness level and is designed to help dieters, or anyone trying to get get fit, monitor their progress and learn how to eat and exercise more healthily.

One of Pro Track's most appealing features is its ease of use. Even for beginners it offers plenty of useful tools without getting bogged down with extra gizmos you'll only use once and then never bother with again. That said, if you want to focus on the dieting side of getting fit in greater detail (or avoid all exercise unless absolutely necessary) you may want to check out some of the dieting software packages in our top 10, as Pro Track puts greater emphasis on exercise workouts than it does on the intricacies of dieting.

In keeping with this, the look and feel of Pro Track seems more designed to appeal to male users than most other packages in this category - the traditional target demographic of dieting software is female, after all. Not that this is a program that excludes women in any way or feels overly testosterized. In fact, if you don't like the look of the interface you can redesign it yourself by choosing from alternate color schemes, although these too emphasize fairly masculine colors (blue, silver and black).

Whilst a lot of other diet and fitness software packages go out of their way to make sure you don't need access to special equipment to enjoy their full benefits, Pro Track seems to be aimed mainly at gym users. In fact, you can use Pro Track to record and compare your workouts in every detail - from how far and how fast you run on the treadmill each time to your totals of crunches, presses and reps (for the uninitiated, "reps" means "repetitions", referring to how many times gym users manage to tell their friends they've been to the gym).

To make logging your workout sessions easier, Pro Track even provides templates you can print out and take to the gym with you so you can fill in your performance details and then transfer them to the computer when you get home. Admittedly, you could do this on a PDA, mobile phone or even a piece of paper (if you're from the 20th century), but somehow that just isn't as exciting.

Another nice touch is that you can download any of 100 professionally designed strength training workout programs for free. Also, unlike a lot of similar packages, Pro Track doesn't limit you to one or two user profiles, so you can use it to track the fitness of other members of your family, or your clients if you are a coach or personal trainer.

Although Pro Track places more emphasis on exercise than it does on dieting, its weight loss and nutrition features are also solid, if not as extensive as some other packages. Calorie tracking is made easy via a streamlined interface, allowing you to log your meals and translate them into any number of charts and graphs in no time at all. It's also worth mentioning that the price is very reasonable compared to most of its competitors.

In summary, Pro Track is a neat, reasonably priced package that does everything the general dieter needs without complicating things with a lot of extraneous gadgets and novelty extras. The flip side of this is that you don't get the same breadth and flexibility of dieting features that come with the top weight loss software packages. Nevertheless, Pro Track will especially appeal to anyone who wants to incorporate strength training into their weight loss program.
