Editor's Verdict:

The Athlete's Diary started as a fitness tracking program for desktop and laptop computers that ran on both Windows and Apple Mac operating systems. Now the Athlete's Diary is available for Palm Devices too and can be used on its own or in conjunction with the desktop or laptop versions.

A major proviso here is that the Athlete's Diary is mainly concerned with exercise and workouts rather than dieting and nutrition. For this reason it won't really appeal to most dieters unless they are keen gym-monkeys or athletes. Even so, whilst some athletes might appreciate its simple, no nonsense approach to tracking their progress others will miss the broader range of tools, screens and features offered by some rival packages.

The Athlete's Diary succeeds in transferring the functionality of the full version to the palm platform very well. Features such as workout logging work just as well, although some of the graphical aspects of the program, such as viewing and comparing charts of your progress over time, are a bit more limited. This is why being able to log your workouts before you leave the gym and then view your overall progress later on a proper screen is very handy, assuming you have access to both versions. Having said all this, one of the reasons that so little is lost in translation to the Palm platform is that the range of features (even when solely looking at fitness features) is fairly narrow anyway.

The price is mid-range as far as dieting software in general goes, but rather high for a program with such limited scope. One might argue the price was justified on the basis of being intended for a different platform with a different price scale, but actually it costs exactly the same as the desktop version does. There is a free trial download available that lasts for fourteen days and only allows you to transfer 5 items to your desktop version (which seems a bit superfluous - surely the 14 day limit would be a sufficient limitation).

Of course, if you want to use the Athlete's Diary to its full potential you will have to purchase both the Palm version and the desktop/laptop version in order to be able to share information between them. Theoretically this costs twice as much, but it is possible to get a $10 discount if you make it clear you're buying both packages. Despite the extra expense, the Athlete's Diary's ability to easily sync profile information between platforms remains one of its most impressive features

All in all, the Athlete's Diary is a handy package for fitness fans but its limited range of functions makes the price tag is rather high, especially if you want to use it on both platforms. On the plus side, the interface system is simple and intuitive and most will find it very easy to use. Less athletic Dieters who want to keep track of their progress on a Palm device might do well to shop around and check out some of the handful of other dieting packages available for mobile platforms reviewed in this section.
