Editor's Verdict:

The Food and Exercise Diary approach to weight loss revolves around educating yourself about how your body works and learning how to make dieting work for you.

The name itself hardly does it justice. Firstly, it's a bit dull. A package called "The Food and Exercise Diary" is hardly going to stand out when its competitors all have names like "Weight-o-matix 2000" and "Dietatron Maximus". Secondly, this software is actually far more than just a food and exercise diary. Yes, you can use it to record what you ate and how much you worked out, but it is what the software does with this information once it's been recorded that provides the real magic. The website argues, and backs, its claim up by citing research, that simply recording and keeping track of what you eat and how much you exercise leads you to eating a healthier diet. Whilst anyone could do this using a spreadsheet, or even just pen and paper, without having to buy any special software, Food and Exercise Diary takes this process to a whole new level.

By charting what you eat and breaking it down into its constituents Food and Exercise Diary (let's call it FED because otherwise it's a bit of a mouthful) records how many calories your body is consuming and compares that to how many you're burning off through exercise. By understanding your metabolism it can tell you what you need to do to lose the desired amount of weight and illustrate your progress using a series of colorful graphs and charts.

Showing you how much weight you are losing, and why, at every stage, FED allows you to continuously troubleshoot and fine-tune your diet so you can achieve your weight loss goals safely and on time.

The downloaded website, www.weightlosssoftware.com, has a different layout and feel to most of its competitors. It's the sort of site where all the information you need can be found in detail on one page if you're willing to scroll downwards for long enough. But it's all there, and all clearly explained. Oddly, you have to root about a bit to find the actual price - usually you would expect this to be featured right up front - particularly since in this case the price is quite reasonable as weight loss software goes. It's almost as if the website was designed by someone who hasn't seen many sales websites and is more in touch with the dieting side of things.

Similarly, the downloading process is a little more cumbersome than that of some of its competitors because you first have to download the software and then pay for the unlock code so you can use it. But it still doesn't take more than a few minutes to do all this. The program, once unlocked, will run on most current Windows operating systems, though not on an Apple Mac.

Once you get to grips with the software itself, you should find it fairly easy to pick up what's what because the interface is fairly intuitive and logically designed. But don't get ahead of yourself - this is a big program and it is possible to get lost if you wander too far without first getting your bearings. A better choice would be to follow the extensive and helpful user guide, at least to begin with.

In keeping with the feel of the name and website, the look of the various pages is functional rather than flash, and the more you explore, the more you get the impression that the designers put most of their work into developing functionality and flexibility rather than superficial gloss and polish.

The "Food Explorer" facility is easily one of FED's strongest features. One of the main practical time-saving advantages of buying the dieting software over recording everything yourself is that FED already knows the nutritional contents of more than 10,000 foods so once you tell it what food you've been eating and how much you ate, it can instantaneously tell you exactly what's been going into your body and how it will affect your diet.

The food database itself is also very flexible so, in the unlikely event that you come across a food that isn't included, it's easy enough to add all the details yourself and save it as a new food which you can use again and again. In most respects FED is on a par with the best of its rivals but when it comes to using and updating the food database it very much leads the pack: not only is logging meals simple and quick, it tends to get quicker as you go along because the meals you enter, like the foods themselves, are saved for future use, meaning that next time you eat a similar meal, you can just copy the same data and use it again without having to enter all its component foods from scratch.

A nice bonus is that you can set up as many user profiles as you like for your friends and family to use, each password protected to ensure privacy. This is unusual because a lot of diet software packages deliberately restrict you to just one or two profiles, so if you want more (for example, if you are a personal trainer managing several clients) you would have to buy a more expensive version of the software. But FED doesn't do this.

You can also run the software on more than one computer so, for example, you can track your calorie budget both at home and at work by saving your updated profile to a memory device and carrying it everywhere with you. It is also possible to export your records to an electronic report and share them with your dietitian or personal trainer whether they have FED installed themselves or not.

Email technical support is unlimited and free, but if you have a problem you'd rather talk about on the phone, that facility is available too.

If you find you don't like the FED system you can get your money back any time within 90 days of purchase - no questions asked. Not all diet software packages offer a full money-back guarantee but when one does it's always a good sign that the company is proud of its software and confident that you will be impressed by it too.

Overall this is a strong package that should appeal to any dieter more interested in clever, practical features and well designed tools rather than flashy graphics, and the price isn't bad either. Could use a snappier name though.
