Editor's Verdict:

Explaining the Weight-by-date approach to dieting can be divided into three main steps: Overcoming your Weight, Balancing your diet and Improving your life. But how does this actually work?

The first step incorporates the psychological and motivational aspects of dieting, such as overcoming the moments of weakness that inevitably come with trying to lose weight, setting sensible goals and then enjoying the motivational boost of seeing them achieved. The emphasis here is on using the information and understanding gained from a program like Weight by Date, combined with your own common sense, to take control of your diet and stay on track to reach your desired weight by your chosen target date.

Step two covers the technical side of how you achieve this through balancing your diet. Central to the the Weight by Date system is keeping a regular, honest and detailed food diary. This allows the software to track your progress, compare your current weight to where you started and project that progress into the future using a series of handy charts that map your route to your goal. The program does the math for you, factoring in nutrients consumed and calories burned to enable you to balance your diet day-by-day. Not only does Weight by Date make your goals seem much more achievable, it puts you in charge of how you achieve them. It does this by allowing you to make a more informed choice about what to eat and how to exercise, making you accountable for your own progress and therefore much more likely to stay the course.

The final step takes this healthy attitude and informed approach to weight loss and applies them to living a fuller life in the long term. A key part of this is taking regular exercise. When you lose weight by eating better, rather than just eating less, you have more energy for exercise and the more you exercise the more fat you burn and the more energy you have. It's a positive feedback loop that only gets stronger as you get fitter. The range of exercises is fairly extensive, particularly with the pro version, but otherwise there are less exercise-based features here than you will find on some of our other top packages.

The price tag with Weight by Date is marginally higher than with other options that offer very similar packages, so relatively speaking this isn't the best value for money you can find. Having said that, if Weight by Date can help you live a longer, healthier, fuller life then it's still a bargain. There are two packages to choose from, the cheapest of which costs about as much as the average competitor's main package. Technically, it is the more expensive "Weight by Date Pro" package we're reviewing here, but it's useful to compare the two before buying to see what it is you pay extra for and work out whether you can get away with buying the cheaper option.

By and large what you pay more for is range and flexibility. To an extent this falls into the same trap as many two-tier systems in that the difference lies only partially in the more expensive version offering you superior technology and partially, one suspects, in the less expensive version being deliberately cut back to create more of a difference between the two and make you more likely to buy the Pro version.

What the Pro version does offer you is more personalization. This includes a meal and exercise planner and a far greater capacity to tailor itself to your diet. It also includes details of at least twice as many meals, restaurants and nutrients. Best of all for techno-heads, it allows you to synchronize Weight by Date with your PDA in order to show off to your friends. This is a clever facility but comes with two drawbacks. Firstly, you'll also need to purchase Weight by Date Mobile to make it work. Secondly, it's impossible to use it without looking like a ponce.

The download website is well laid out and cleverly organized, though is it really a good idea to put so many numbers, stats and graphs on the welcome page? That's the sort of thing that might scare a lot of people off. Fortunately, there is also a friendly 5 minute video you can download that explains it all to you in a less daunting fashion. Better yet, there's a clear chart which explains exactly what you get with the two different packages, something other similar websites sometimes leave out.

The look of the software itself is smart and modern and makes it easy to find your way around and understand the various charts available after only a modicum of initial fumbling. Although there are numbers and stats involved, the information is always visually represented too so you can see what's what at a glance, and you can even print and color them in if the mood takes you. Logging your progress is also simple, flexible and intuitive - clearly this system is designed to be accessible even for non-expert computer users. Even so, if you're still none the wiser there is a PDF users' guide to get you started as well as free email and telephone support. Another plus is the 15 day free trial version, so you can decide whether Weight by Date is for you before spending any money (nb. Sadly, neither the Free Trial nor main packages are available for Apple Macs).

Weight by Date is a solid, well-designed package, with a nice emphasis on common sense and helping you to understand and hold yourself accountable for your diet. If you don't mind not having a huge range of exercise-focused features as well as the diet-based ones and are happy to pay just a little over the odds, Weight by Date might not be a bad choice for you.
