Editor's Verdict:

Dieting is hard. Weightmania can't change that, but it does promise to make you almost twice as likely to succeed. It works by helping you organize your diet, get the most out of workouts and stay motivated by setting realistic, regular weight-loss goals and then seeing them achieved. In this way Weightmania aims to keep you on track to achieve your desired weight by your target date and set you on course a lifetime of healthier living.

The most impressive aspect of Weightmania, aside from its huge range of tracking options, is how well-balanced it is. It offers as much advice on the exercise side of weight loss as it does on dieting itself. It's also just as hot at helping you to overcome your psychological barriers and stay motivated as it is on actually teaching you what you need to eat and why. This adds up to a comprehensive set of tools for helping you take control of your diet, body and lifestyle.

The main problem with Weightmania (apart from the fact that it sounds like an eating disorder) is that it is slightly on the pricey side. Having said that, for the price you pay you do get all the whistles and bells you could wish for from a dieting software program - and a wealth of fitness and exercise features besides. And unlike some diet software it runs on a Mac as well as a PC.

In fact Weightmania really has all the technical angles covered. It can run on Palm Pilots or smart phones and there are even versions designed for multi-users or network use. It's also flexible enough to be used by schools and personal trainers to track dozens of clients, each with their own profile. A word of caution though - be sure you buy the right version of the software for your needs, as there are several different packages - more than most other diet software systems - and choosing the right one can be slightly more complicated than the front page suggests.

Weightmania is also up there with the best of the Diet Software programs in its range of exercise and workout related features. These can be enhanced further by purchasing the Athlete's Database Gold add-on, although this again means shelling out more cash to supplement a package that is already one of the more expensive in its category.

Weightmania is slightly more hardcore than a lot of other packages, which are often quite careful not to intimidate non-expert computer users or dieters for whom even the thought of wrangling with loads of numbers and statistics brings them out in a rash. The sheer number of different things you can do and track and chart with this program does make for a slightly more cluttered screen, but this is something you'll quickly get used to. The color scheme too is a bit grey and bland and the graphics aren't quite as big and shiny as with some packages (to help draw attention away from the aforementioned numbers and stats). Fortunately all the different modules in Weightmania have a standardized design, so once you know your way around one module you've got a head start on learning all the others. If you do get stuck there is a short quick start guide, a huge user guide, extensive built-in help and free online support via email.

If you are unsure about whether Weightmania is right for you, you can always download the free trial first and make your mind up before buying. This is a handy facility because, unlike a lot of the top packages, there is no complete money-back guarantee available if you are not satisfied. Customers who buy Weightmania on CD rather than as a download can get a refund minus postage and "handling" (whatever that means) if they claim within 14 days of purchase, but only if they haven't opened or installed the software (!). Download customers don't even get that. So do make sure you try before you buy (it rhymes so it must be a good idea).

If you do buy and install the program you'll find that the wealth of tools, information and charts on offer is incredibly well organized and has clearly been very thoroughly thought out. Given its sophistication, daily logging of meals and exercise activities could have been arduous and time-consuming, but the latest versions of Weightmania (it's been around for more than 5 years now) include big improvements which make logging more flexible and intuitive, as well as much less repetitive and laborious.

But it's only once you've logged your data that you get to see what Weightmania can really do. As well as the obvious charts for weight, calories consumed and burned etc you can easily track dozens of nutrients, measurements and ratios, many of which you may never have heard of (but are almost definitely not made up). You don't have to go into that much detail, of course - it's quite possible to keep it simple and just keep track of your calories, carbs and fats etc if you choose - but the option is there. That's another advantage of Weightmania over more basic dieting packages - if you stump out the cash and put in the time you can learn quite a lot about how the body works and what dieting does to it. And it's also quite possible to become completely obsessed with just watching the various lines and bars oscillate and change day by day as you try out each new food or exercise strategy to see what happens.

Weightmania offers you the full enchilada of diet and exercise tracking tools. The higher price is justified by the extra sophistication and flexibility this package offers you, but bear in mind that a lot of dieters won't tend to use half of these extra gizmos and won't have time to explore all the extra options and keep track of their daily flodamine intake (okay, that one is made up). If you just want a basic, reasonably priced and easy to learn diet software package there are plenty of cheaper options in our top 10 that offer you almost as much for considerably less. Otherwise, why not go the whole hog - investing in Weightmania Pro is a purchase few serious dieters will regret.
